My thrid
and last class with this group
In this
class something very different happened to me. My students arrived pretty late
to classes, and some of them never showed up. Basically, I worked with the half
of the students this group has. As you can imagine, this makes our planning
execution very difficult because you planned for 50 mins, in my case, I had to
adapt a 50mins class into a 40 mins. It was kind of complicated to do it so,
and for that reason I had to eliminate one of the things I had planned for
them.
As usual, I
started the class greeting the students and developing the warm up. Since the
topic the Irregular verbs, I wanted to call up the previous knowledge about the
regular verbs. I divided the class and the board into two. I pasted the 3
different categories in which regular verbs are divided, endings in “d”, “ed”, “ied”.
They had some strips of paper with verbs in the simple present. What they had
to do was to paste the verbs in the right column according to their endings in
the past.
The activity
worked very well since they were practicing what they studied before, and when
they realized about the mistakes they remember what they have learned.
Later, I
ask them what they knew about the irregular verbs. This to me was like to set
an idea on how hard the class was going to be. They answered perfectly and
establish the difference between the regular and irregular verbs.
So, what I
did was to paste some charts with the classification of the irregular verbs. There
were some examples of each category for them to see them and realize about
them.
The teacher
told me that it would be a nice idea to teach them about vocabulary, so I decided
to put different verbs from the ones they were used to. With this I asked them “any
new words?” and they were pointing out the ones they didn’t know, having me
explaining to them using mimics.
Later, we
worked with a reading. For sure we read it together and later they had to
underline the verbs in the past. At the end, they were supposed to answer the
questions about the reading.
The problem
I had with this is the lack of vocabulary they seem to had, as well the
difficulty of the pronunciation; besides that, they did not have any problem.
At the end,
I made them work in trios and answer some questions I wrote on the board. Then,
they had to retell some of the things their classmates just said.
To conclude
the class I thanked them for be so kind and participative, and I gave to them
some candies. That was how I closed this class and this 2nd period.
Hello Ms. Elizabeth. I always enjoy reading your entries. You really put a big effort in your job. I really like the way you made the class interesting, thought-provoking, motivating and attractive for your students. It's nice to know that you were able to eliminate one of the activities you've planned as that shows that you were aware as to take off the least important. I think you're good at varying and making the content more digestible for your students, and that is pretty nice. Congrats Ely. You've done your best as always, keep on the same track!
ResponderEliminarWell, this one was not so long, but it was entertaining enough. WEll, there are always some problems that come up. This time, you had a big issue, but as always, it did not stop you. You are always using visual activities that catch students' attention, and that is something that I admire from you. You are peculiar with that. Anyways, there is too much to work with the group since they lack vocabulary to express themselves, but they will do their best later. Just keep doing the same and improve whenever you have to. :) CHeers.
ResponderEliminarHello ,Teacher Elizabeth, you are a hardworking person and i don´t have any doubt about that. The topic you taught is kind of difficult and maybe it takes long for the students to assimilate it. But you always do the best you can even though once in a while some inconveniences occur. Always keep in mind you can stumble with some stones in your way.
ResponderEliminarTeaching is an art that takes time and wisdom to refine.
Hahahahaha, It was really unusual what happened to you the last time, but you know that the class was really nice at the end. Irregular verbs in the past are not a piece of cake to anybody, and we know how this group is, but I can tell you that what you did was nice and they had the chance to practice and ask their doubts. What I really like about your class, was the las activity in which they had to answer the 3 questions and share their classmates explanations as well, also the Michal Jackson Reading was really nice...but I was waiting for Whitney Houston´s Reading too...(u know) jajajaaja Congrats my dear Ely...and charge your batteries for the 3rd period!!!
ResponderEliminarHi my pretty friend!! Wuao is a little complicated to work with this group for everything you faced. It seems that they do not like to work, but as a teacher we are to facing that. I know you very well and I know that you did it excellent in all your classes. Congratulation my dear friend.
ResponderEliminarGreat class sensual!
ResponderEliminarIt is nice to see how you manage the ten-minute problem! You did it nice. I know that it is not so easy. What I do is that I set and extra activity in the lesson plan, this "extra activity" is develope in case I have more time and is omitted in case I don't have time. If time is not enough, I set this extra activity as a homework, in this way I have the possibility to cover either I have extra time or not enough time.
It is nice to see you teaching!
Hy Ely it is nice to see how you enjoy and put all you can on your activities, you always make students to participate and the activities you bring make them feel comfortable with the topic they are studying. As many people are visual it is great that we bring as many visual aids as we can, and you do it Teach... there you go girl!!!
ResponderEliminarHello Eli!! I can imagine that you got worried when you saw the time and your students were not there, but I am glad to know that you managed that situation very well!! I really like the activities you did, because your students had fun and learned at the same time, I think it is important to diagnose the knowledge of the students before starting the class. Good job Eli!! By the way, you looked very elegant!
